An NSF-sponsored workshop, on Strategic Ambition and Environmental Constraint: a Conference-Workshop on the Impact of Rapid Environmental Degradation on the Security Strategies of Arctic States, will be held on October 20 in Washington DC. The workshop features two dozen experts—on the Arctic environment, on Arctic security, and on global threat assessment and strategy—discussing the collision of geopolitical rivalry with environmental crisis. The breakdown of relations between Russia and other Arctic Council states aggravates a trend toward militarization even as accelerating environmental degradation prioritizes broader international cooperation.
